Portofino
Take Italy, for example. There are numerous coastal areas where you can enjoy a range of landscapes such as luxurious beaches, clear blue water, and more, but one of the most spectacular Mediterranean coastal areas of Italy is the area of Liguria. It is more widely known as the Italian Riviera and is nothing short of spectacular. You will find rugged cliffs above the sea, private and isolated coves, and some of the friendliest and most charming villages in all of Italy. Portofino is known as a glamourous place despite its small size, along with the quaint and pleasant smaller village of Cinque Terra. For the really adventurous, there is a well travelled foot path between Portofino and Cinque Terra, adding to the fun and unique experience of visiting this area.
The most well known part of the Italian Riviera is the port city of Genoa, the busiest in all of Italy. It is also the location of many of the area's most amazing and historic cultural sites that truly display the incredible culture of Italy. Take a walk along the Via Garibaldi and you will see the ornate palaces built in the 16th century by wealthy local families, many of which are open to the public as a place to have refreshments or as a museum. There is a great deal of interesting history along this extravagant street of palaces, but just a short distance away is a completely different aspect of historic Genoa. It is called the Caruggi District, and it is truly a step back into the medieval times of Italy. The many alleys and narrow streets intertwine with each other, creating what seems like a complicated maze. It's perfectly safe, and definitely an experience worth pursuing.
Comino
An entirely different world can be found along the Mediterranean coastal areas of Morocco. This part of North Africa has been a crossroads for the world going back thousands of years, so it has seen many different influences from invaders, settlers, and people just passing through. At various times it has been controlled by the Romans, French, Spanish, and Arabs, all of whom left behind relics and remnants of their presence.
Along with the historic aspects of Morocco, you will find stunning coastal resorts and villages. For instance, Al Hoceima is adjacent to a large nature park, which can easily be observed and enjoyed from the city's cliff top location. There are soft sand beaches, hiking trails, and a huge array of animal life native to the area. A large part of the Mediterranean coast of Morocco features amazing cliffs, rock formations, and terrific views of the sea.
Thasos
Many people do not realize that along the Mediterranean coastline there is a small area of territory that is a protectorate of Spain. This area, between the city of Melilla and the city of Ceuta, is a popular Mediterranean destination where visitors can soak up sunshine, adventure, and the ancient heritage of this part of the world. Because it is administered by Spain, there are also plentiful opportunities to cross over into Spain proper quite quickly and easily. But you won't want to do that until you have fully explored the remnants and influence of previous rulers of the region, including the Romans, Byzantines, and Arabs, just to name a few.
